A curated beginning
This release contains 235 museum records, 59 named artist records, 15 broad tradition pathways, nine regions and five technique introductions. It is a discovery tool, not a comprehensive history. Ancient and contemporary coverage is incomplete; full editorial biographies and historical event guides remain future work; selected museum biography excerpts are included where available.
Sources you can follow
Object titles, maker names, dates, places, dimensions and materials come from the Cleveland Museum of Art API. Every artwork links to its original museum catalogue. Artist dates come from the museum’s collection creator records. Original source snapshots are included with the project.
Each image was selected only when its individual museum record returned share_license_status: CC0 and a usable museum image URL. The web-size images are cached locally from the museum’s open-access CDN; larger viewer images use the original CDN. Metadata and eligible images are marked CC0 by the provider. Credit lines are preserved. Short collection descriptions and available artist biography excerpts are credited to the museum and used under its CC0 dataset designation.

Dates, places and uncertainty
Display dates preserve museum wording. Timeline markers show the catalogue’s start and end range; a single-year label is not an independent guarantee of precision. Geographic lanes are editorial navigation groupings based on cultural or geographic contexts, not artist nationality. Tradition pathways describe this sample and should not be read as definitive movement taxonomies. Catalogue terminology may reflect historical collecting practices.

Artist learning guides
All 59 artist profiles include a bilingual life introduction and material, style and colour comparison, with 178 study entries in total. Most entries use CC0 Cleveland images; additional reference works link to museum or specialist catalogues without reproducing restricted images. Some dates and attributions are uncertain; Chazeray has two securely attributed examples and one explicitly uncertain comparison.
A considered next chapter
The next editorial priority is deeper coverage of underrepresented regions, reviewed interpretation, additional museum partners and accessible guided looking. Future learning resources and carefully disclosed commercial links may support the project. This prototype has no advertising, subscriptions or analytics.
